A new box of Marker pens
My friend, the illustrator Kate Sheppard, came round a couple of weeks ago to show me the dummy of a picture book she’s working on. I was so impressed with the way she uses marker pens that I bought myself a few to play with.
I tried marker pens many years ago. You used to be able to get a spray thing that attached to them so that you can use them like an airbrush. That was a total waste of time! I never got on with the smell either nor the way the inks bled into the paper.
But these new Copic Ciao markers are wonderful. They have a hard square nib at one end and the wonderful soft pointy brush at the other. I was so impressed I bought a great big box of them. I have great plans for what I want to do with them. But first I need to learn how to use them!
Have fun watching this video in which I unpacked my big box of Copic markers and have a first go at colouring in my One Direction Cartoon drawing.
They did cost a lot, but you can get smaller sets. I think they are a great investment. You can replace the nibs and refill the pens too, which makes them much more economical over time.

Hi Shoo
Nice to see you’re enjoying the felt tips, they are fun aren’t they…
Also have you tried the Pentel Colour brush pen? I have one grey one and love it, I find the colour is more subtle and not so heavy as the Copic pens, it doesn’t bleed into the paper as much (I use them on layout paper, so I need a non bleed one.) Altho’ they say they are not light fast, which is a bit annoying.
Anyway happy drawing
Best wishes

Yes, enjoying them a lot. I’m using letraset comic book bleed proof paper, which is quite good. Have discovered copies work well with crayon!
hows the book coming along?
Hi Shoo
Thanks for asking. It Is Done. I have just today sent my dummy book off to Walker Books, a momentous day!
Just wondering do you think i should do a multiple submission? any advice most welcome.
By the way…I included nearly all your suggestions in the book, which have i think added a certain peppering of piquancy.
Best wishes
Kate
Fab Good luck. Wait and see what happens with Walker (I can’t believe they won’t snap your hand off!)
How long would you leave it?
Now that’s hard to say. If they like it, they’ll phone very soon. Otherwise a couple of weeks ask if they’ve received it.
Thanks Shoo, I’ll let you know what transpires…
By the way I was hooting (with laughter) at your accents films esp. the brummie accent, really funny…and a very convincing aristo impression. It’s not a bad life is it Shoo, being a youtube sensation? Not that I can speak from personal experience, of course, but you do seem to have a good time.
Best regards
Kate
Its bait different from any thing I thought id end up doing :)
