Flamazine came together in 1983. They met mostly in Laurie's flat in Welwyn Garden City, where Laurie had amassed a considerable amount of recording equipment for those days.

Shoo and Marius established themselves as the writing partnership and Laurie's production expertise and iconic guitar style created a unique sound that instantly drew admirers.

Early attempts to gain a recording deal were thwarted but the band were soon taken under the wing of Light and Sound Design (LSD), a rock stage lighting company in Birmingham. One of the directors, Simon Austin had been to the same school as Shoo and Marius.

The band were set up in two flats in Gillott Road, of the Hagley Road in Edgebaston, Birmingham.

A working routine of writing and recording followed. Work was done in a studio in Worcester, in the UB40 studios in Digbeth and also in Simon's garage in leafy Barnt Green.

Rehearsals began in the Gooch Street studios in what is now Birmingham's Chinatown.

The promo videos were shot over two bitterly cold nights in early 1994 at the LSD warehouse. Meanwhile Simon gave up managing for personal rasons, and the remaining management began seriously looking for a recording deal. EMI were very interested and negotiations had begun.

The Flams played their only live performance in a small club in Wolverhampton. The next day they effectively split up.

LSD had spent much time and effort on their other bands, UFO and Tobruk. By the time it was Flamazine's turn they had become bored of the waiting. Marius, Laurie and John went to London to pursue their music, while Shoo moved to West Wales to pick his illustration career.
