Who needs a real baby when you can have a robot instead?

I love this idea of having a practice baby to get experience with before you have a real one. The interactive ebook I’m working on works this theme. Watch the movie and see what’s available right now in the robot baby business from Reality Works. Alternatively you can just download Sweet Little baby Boo! to your iphone and have all the fun for a tiny fraction of the cost!

Don’t Strangle your Teething Toddler!

crying babyI know that sometimes you might be driven to distraction by an endlessly crying baby, but you wouldn’t want any harm to come to the innocent child.

It seems the latest craze for calming teething toddlers is to let them wear Baltic Amber necklaces. I assumed, when I first heard about them, that the teething toddler would chew on them. I wasn’t happy about this. I’ve picked up baltic amber on the beach and polished it myself, I know how brittle it can be. I’m not sure I’d want any child in my care choking on amber chips. Nor would I want them to choke on the beads when the necklace inevitably breaks!

Apparently the idea is that calming chemicals are given off just by wearing amber next to the skin. Tests have shown that amber needs to get to 200 degrees before it gives off any volatiles. Is it a passing fad? I don’t know – but I wouldn’t tie any old piece of string round a small child’s neck, which is what you are doing here. Buy them a lovely Amber necklace for sure, but save it and give it to them on their eighteenth birthday, when you’ve successfully brought them through all of childhood’s dangers!

So How can I calm a Teething Toddler?

Sweet Little Baby Boo! Free upgrade to v1.1

Hooray! Version 1.1 – a free update – is available on itunes for my Sweet Little Baby Boo! iphone app.

There are one or two technical improvements which you probably won’t notice, but now the app comes with a choice of babies!

For a start there are girls and they all come in pinkish, brownish and yellowish shades, so they should appeal to a wider, international market.

If you’ve got this on your phone already upgrade now.

If you haven’t – why not!?”>Get it here right now! :-)

Sweet Little Baby Boo! 1.1 on it’s way

I’ve been working hard on an upgrade to Sweet Little Baby Boo! The artwork was easy, working out how I get all the developer certificates right so that I can upload the files was another thing altogether. I suppose if you are a proper programmer, it all makes sense, but if you do complicated things like this sporadically, it’s easy to forget the simpler stages along the way.

However, the app is now awaiting approval for upgrading at the itunes store – Hooray!

The new version has six babies – three girls and three boys, in three different shades, which I hope will cover most bases. I’ll let you know when it goes live and you can upgrade your 1.0 version for free.

The next project

I’ve no idea how long it’s going to take, as it all has to be done in my spare time, however, here’s a sneak peek at a bit of sketching for the next project which is called… I’ve not entirely decided yet. I suppose I should have a code name for it.

It’s a fully interactive story with animations written for the ipad, so no dodgy hacking up a book and trying to make it fit and flip. There is so much planning and illustrating and animating to do! it’s a bit intimidating really. I suppose the thing to do is give it a title and do a logo and get on with it.

I’ve worked out the worst of the coding, i needed a sliding flip gallery section. Not being a programmer, it nearly blew a fuse in my brain trying to work t out but I did. Now I’m wondering if I should try doing it another way?

in the meantime, you can get Sweet Little Baby Boo! from the itunes store by clicking here.

Babies need research

A random twitter tweet set me thinking. The Seaport Hotel, somewhere in the States were looking for customers to come to their Baby Fair. They said:

Here’s an interesting fact: Having a baby is the most demanding consumer research project most people will ever confront. Read books, read magazines, read reviews, read blogs, ask friends, ask siblings, ask strangers, shop in stores, shop online, make decisions, doubt decisions, make new decisions..Sound familiar?

It certainly is true for would be mother’s and their girlfriends and female family. I vaguely remember taking my wife’s decision as being pretty final in most things we ever bought or did for our babies. I don’t remember having many baby conversations with male friends. If I tried, being a bit of a “new man” myself, they would look embarrased and shuffle way!

I knew I wanted to have children and had a discussion about it the night we got engaged, determining when would be best the time. We planned it almost to the day.

But babies don’t come with instruction manuals. Every one is different. Research is all you can do. Keep talking to your friends and family, but most importantly, keep talking to your babies – even when they are six foot three and can pick you up and put you over their shoulders… they are still your babies!
