Plaintive messages

I went on a lovely, sunny walk in the Forest with my daughter, this afternoon. We went off the beaten track, trying to find the other side of the lake, where my daughter imagines something special hides – we didn’t find it this time.

However we did find a burst balloon hanging from a tree. It’s a message from Katy to Jess who was a good friend who always made her laugh and cry. Unfortunately, I can’t make out any more as the message was written on a self-adhesive label that was wrapped around the string. The message was destroyed as I tried to open it up. I’ve tried photographing it from behind and blending two side of the message together on photoshop, but there is not enough to work on.

Probably a good thing too. It feels like a heartfelt message of loss.

Maybe such messages should be consumed by fire, which will take the meaning up into the heavens with it. Trusting it to a balloon is not safe. Anyone could find it and distort the meaning and sentiment of the message so that if it ever gets to where it was heading, the wrong impression will be given to whoever the message was meant for. Hmm! It there an idea for a story here?

Preston and Chantelle – a real, live fairy story.

Okay, I admit it – I’m riveted by Chantelle and Preston’s relationship on Big Brother. The pair met on Celebrity Big Brother, some four years ago. He was Prince Charming and she was Cinderella – a girl from nowhere, who got to go to the Royal Ball. Yes, they fell in love and got married and lived happily ever af…

Oh no! It all went wrong after a year and they got divorced. They are now backtogether, in the Big Brother house, and it’s plain to see, they are both hurting and still very much in love. You couldn’t make this stuff up.

As a family, we stand around and watch the kitchen TV, when the stardom-crossed lovers have their moments. We become silent and transfixed, as this ancient fairy tale works itself out in front of our eyes. We don’t know them personally, but in some ways we know them very well, for we all are, or have been, Chantelles and Prestons.

Fairy tales survive the test of time because they are truly great stories that everyone can understand and empathise with. I’m sure that most of the Big Brother audience, are willing them on, hoping they will get back together, pick up their lives and move on – to live happily ever after.

No Frogspawn.

I guess the frogs need to do a lot of croaking and a lot of wooing before they get around to spawning. I’m off to visit two schools in Rhyl in North Wales today, so I’ll probably miss all the fun!

I was surprised to see tadpoles in an infant class this week. They must breed their frogs more sturdily in the Welsh Valleys!
