Nearly Finished Artwork for Walker- The boy who can talk to dogs

In this video I do a lot of drawing and painting and talking about artwork and making children’s books as I create the final artwork for the image I prepared as a rough in the previous video

My Editor, Janet, loved the sketches I sent her and now it is a race against time to finish the artwork for the print deadline. I need to paint at least eight images a day, preferably more. It doesn’t help that Mrs Rayner is going away for a week and I have to spend a day in London and we have builders in, who I have to lease with, and cook supper for my aged Mother and go shopping for her and me and my son… but I will get there in time, even if I have to work late in the evenings. It’s part of the “Glamour” of being an illustrator.

Actually, that sounds like the title of a video blog!

It is all painted greyscale as It is going to be a back and white book. The colour I use is:
Neutral Tint Half Pan Watercolour Paint

Children’s Book Illustration Master Class

I had an email from Galya, an art student from Wales, wanting to ask me questions for her dissertation. I made a video for her, which I thought might be interesting for others to watch too.

Here are her questions:

1. Do you think that the different areas of illustration(picturebooks, editorial, etc.) differ a lot in terms of the methods you use to visually communicate the idea or message that you want to convey and how?

2. Focusing specifically on your children’s books illustration, do you have to adapt your methods of illustration individually for each book? If so, in what way?

3. How do you select the colours that you use and is there a specific meaning or message in the colours you choose?

If this suggests questions you would like me to talk about on a video, please feel free to ask.

Illustrating Children’s Books

I’ve just finished page 140 of the Michael Morpurgo book that i’ve been illustrating all this month. That’s the last page – hooray! But then I didn’t like it, so I wanted to do it again.

This video will show you how I copy the illustration I didn’t like and turn it into one I do like.

Also there’s a load of chat about illustrating and techniques.
