Creating more complex drawings – A Table Lamp

Now we really can start putting all those simple shapes together, starting with a drawing of a lamp stand. You can think of a simple lampshade as a section of a cone, or you could think of it as a cylinder, one end of which has a diameter smaller than the other.

The lamp stand shaft is a narrow and simple cylinder standing on end, on top of a disk that makes up the base. In this case all three simple shapes could have been formed by rotating them around a central axis, as we learned in the lesson on rotated objects .

The horizontal lines in the 2D profile, or sideways elevation drawing, become circles as you look at the plan from above. To draw a 3D representation, we draw those circles as ellipses around the central axis. If you understand the plan, you can draw the lamp stand from any angle. Now turn simple stick-shaped shaft of the stand into the vase that we learned to draw in the last lesson. And maybe be a bit more adventurous with the lampshade. Now the drawing looks more 3D and also much more interesting.

Task: Draw thumbnail sketches of the lamp stand until you are confident you understand how to do it. Then try to draw it from different angles, maybe even from below – you may even have a go at drawing the light bulb fitting!
