Lockdown Quarantine Storytime

I wondered what I could do to help all those who are stuck inside during the Corona Virus Quarantine Lockdown Periods and decide that I should tell stories as if I was on a school visit. Read the story, talk about it and comment on it and draw characters from the story too.

And I thought I would do it live!

Learn to draw Galactic Dodecathelon Champion Spike Trackaway by following Shoo’s how to draw section in the video.

As the video stream is “Made for Kids” there can be no comments or chat during the show, because of recent safeguarding changes at YouTube.

However, I will however be taking comments and suggestions on my twitter stream at @shoorayner. If you want to share drawings that are related to my books and stories, then please use the hashtag #shoobeedoodle.

I am going to try and do this every week day during the current, growing crisis as a sort of distance learning option for schools that have closed or may have too soon.

Feel free to set classwork around the stories, to embed the video on your own website and share your work through your school or class twitter account.

The Ginger Ninja – Read Aloud Story

We are living in a new world for authors and creatives – the internet has changed everything.

With that in mind, I am beginning to tell my stories on YouTube, with only advertising and Patreon to support them. So this is the start of an experiment. If it doesn’t work, then I will take the videos down but, in the meantime, I hope you will enjoy the storytellings I’ll be posting.

I have made some stories available before, with flashy transitions from one illustration to another, but  I’ve decided to do a simple, over the shoulder view of the book as I read it. This allows the viewer to read along with me, as a bedtime story or to bolster reading skills.

I hope it might inspire some to get a copy from the library or from the links below, to be able to read along and then feel confident to read alone. Following along with a story is a brilliant way to build confidence to read a whole book on your own.

How to paint like Beatrix Potter – Mr Jeremy Fisher

I think this must be my longest video ever! It’s a video of me trying to paint a page from The Tale of Mr Jeremy Fisher by Beatrix Potter. I’ve not cut out a huge amount, maybe five minutes, so this is pretty much in real time.

My first attempt went very wrong, because I was using the wrong paper and the wrong brush. The second attempt was much better but I think the pencil is all wrong and I still haven’t got the right brush.

Last Friday, I went to the British Museum to get up close with some of her artwork to really understand her style. It was an amazing experience. One of the best art lessons I’ve ever had. It was like being with Miss Potter for the afternoon. I’ll tell you about it in my next videos.
