  • Body-Proportions---4Do you need to know about body proportions when drawing cartoons? Can’t you just draw what you like – big heads or circular bodies?

Well, yes you can, but using our definition of a cartoon as “A simple, two dimensional drawing,” cartoons are good for realistic or representational drawings too.

A basic understanding of body proportions will stand you in good stead whether drawing realistic or character drawings. The more you explore and practice body proportions, the more naturally it will come to you. Then, you won’t have to think about it, but just draw.

  • I hope you have had some fun drawing stick men? They are an extremely useful tool for quickly sketching poses, attitudes and expression.

But how do we make the stick man a little more sophisticated? How can we draw something we might hang clothes on?

The mannequin is simple model gives us a an idea to work with – an idea of a more solid stick man (or woman) that you can visualise in your mind’s eye with a bit of practice.

There is a work sheet attached. Click the picture to download.
