• How-to-draw-the-atomiumI went to Brussels this week and was drawing monuments from around the world with the Children at the British International School. Rosaria and Pandora will be doing a French project next week and I said I would show them how to draw the Atomium in Brussels. It is not easy!

    Good luck!

  • Eurosketchbook-smallSaturday saw the 2014 Eurovision Song contest. I drew all the way through and tweeted the results as I went along. It was exhausting!

Each song is about 2 minutes long, the camera can sometimes take 30 seconds to focus in on the singer – very frustrating. I have to choose who is the person to draw and go with it.

I suppose I take a snapshot in my mind and do the best I can. The camera doesn’t stay on the person you want for very long, and then an ice skater appears so you never get to see the drawing subject again!

It requires speed, concentration and stamina! The next song was usually starting as I was still tweeting the previous drawing.

    Hope you enjoy.

  • How-to-draw-a-turtleHere is a nice and easy way to draw a cartoon turtle. This was inspired by a classroom session during my recent trip to Oman. The children were studying persuasive writing. I was just saying don’t be mean to turtles wouldn’t work and that people needed to be made to think about human behaviour from a turtle’s point of view, building empathy with the creatures.

This can be done with cartoons, but there is a fine line between a cartoon that makes you think and one that just makes you laugh and move on. Some cartoons can be so generic that they don’t convey any kind of message at all because the viewer is so used to seeing the image or other that look like it. It’s possible even to give a completely different message under those circumstances!

You can also try drawing a more realistic turtle in pencil with this video.
